Fostering 101

What is fostering?

Fostering is the process of taking a shelter animal into your home temporarily for the benefit of the animal and the shelter. Foster families save lives by freeing up space in the shelter, socializing animals, care for sick or orphaned animals and assisting with preventing disease transmission in the shelter.

In this section you'll find plenty of help, including dog and cat foster care guides, sanitation tips for foster homes, creative ideas to help your foster find their forever home and more!

Fostering Dogs

Typically, the dogs that need fosters are puppies that are too young for adoption or need bottle feeding, nursing moms with their puppies, dogs that need medical care or dogs that just need a break from shelter life.

The time needed for dog fosters varies greatly depending on the reason for the foster. Puppies need to be 8 weeks old to get their vaccinations so if you start fostering them at 1-2 weeks you can expect to keep them for at least 6 weeks. On the other hand, adult dogs that need break from the shelter can be out anywhere from an hour (playdate) to a month or two depending on your available and their needs.

Fostering Cats: Why We Urgently Need Your Help

From April through November there is an influx of kittens in the shelters across the country and we need fosters who can save these vulnerable lives. Kitten fosters provide care and support to kittens until they are old enough, healthy enough or social enough to be adopted.

There are ALWAYS more kittens and cats in need than foster families available. You can make a bog difference by fostering these vulnerable animals for only a couple weeks and helping to spread the word about your experience to other prospective foster parents.
