BARN CAT PROGRAM
Some cats who end up at the SPCA of NENC cannot adapt to indoor living. They may be feral (born and raised in the wild), or they may be under-socialized and prefer life with little human contact. Whatever their reason, we believe that these cats deserve a happy life and can be placed with families who value them as we do.
WHY ADOPT A BARN CAT?
Adopting a barn cat can be a mutually beneficial relationship. You'll be saving the life of a healthy animal, and they will help control any rodent or small pest populations.
Our adoptable barn cats are:
-
Healthy
-
Spayed or Neutered
-
Up-to-Date on Vaccinations
We strongly recommend adopting 2 barn cats together. This way they can keep each other company, and use each other for warmth in cold weather. Because each cat is unique, SPCA of NENC cannot guarantee the personality of the cat. Some cats may never seek human affection, while others may eventually warm up.
HOW TO ADOPT A BARN CAT.
As a barn cat caregiver, here's what you'll need to provide:
-
Safe and permanent shelter with weather-proof roofing
-
Continuous fresh food and water
-
Veterinary care as needed
-
Acclimation space and time
For the cat's safety, and to ensure that they acclimate instead of running away, your new working cat must be kept in an escape-proof and cat-safe area in their new environment for a minimum of 2 weeks. After this adjustment period, they can be given free range in their new home.
